AI not only dream but present need: NC President Deuba

LALITPUR: Nepali Congress President and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said artificial intelligence (AI) is not only a future dream but also a present need.

During a talk programme organized by the Science and IT Department of the party at central office, Lalitpur, on Sunday, NC President Deuba said IT plays a significant role in providing public service conveniently and transparently.

The programme titled ‘AI for Nepal’s Development’. ‘Present age is defined by science and technology. AI is not mere a dream, but a present need. It is imperative to utilize AI in the sectors spanning education, health, agriculture, infrastructures, employment and public service delivery,’ he underlined.

The NC President explained the convenience ensured by the citizen’s increasing access to internet, mobile banking and use of online forms getting rife, and digital health and education practiced widely. Easy, inclusive and dignified life is the present reality, which is possible because of IT, he reminded.

According to him, the Telecommunications Policy, Act and Regulation brought during NC’s leadership of government paved way to secure present achievements. The far-flung areas and hamlets are now well connected. However, there are a lot to work to fully leverage the IT so that expansion in banking, public service, agriculture and health would be further improved.

Deuba took time to claim that it was all because of the liberal and progressive policy NC had adopted. NC is always for social transformation through innovation and technology.

Now, the party is for promoting economic activities through massive use of IT, he said, adding that youth entrepreneurs, researchers and private sectors could collaborate for further development of IT, for which the NC is committed.

‘All sides should work in unison to make prosperous digital Nepal by enhancing technology and innovation. NC is thoroughly studying the issues surrounding IT,’ Deuba shared.

On the occasion, AI expert Dr Suresh Pokharel said AI was developing rapidly and its right use has been essential for development.

Chief of Science and IT Development of NC, Sushila Bhatta Mishra, informed that the programme was organized to discuss how Nepal’s development could be forwarded in the facing of AI influence. An informed policy is required to resolve problems and ensure achievements surrounding AI, according to her.
