Teaching hospital conducts first Sex Change Surgery in Nepal

KATHMANDU: For the first time, sex reassignment surgery (Sex Change Surgery) has been conducted in Nepal at Teaching Hospital Maharajgunj.

The Chief of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Plastic Surgery Department, Professor Dr Jayan Man Shrestha, informed by organising a press conference on Sunday that the first sex reassignment surgery (Male to Female) has been conducted successfully.

Dr Shrestha said that a 25-year-old transgender person from Janakpur has changed the gender through surgery.

According to Dr Shrestha, by using needed hormones, female physical organ has been restructured.

With the success of surgery, now interested people can change their sex in Nepal, avoiding the expensive surgery in foreign countries. In Nepal, it takes Rs. 150,000 to 200,000 for the surgery.

Teaching Hospital Plastic Surgeon Professor Dr Ishwar Lohani informed that a Gender Affirming Clinic will be established in the hospital to provide sex change surgery-related services.
