KATHMANDU: The 20 commercial banks in Nepal posted a combined net profit of Rs 69.87 billion in the last fiscal year, marking a 32.27% increase from the previous year, according to their unaudited financial statements.
The banks had collectively earned Rs 52.82 billion in net profit in FY 2024/25. Their combined profit therefore increased by Rs 17.05 billion year-on-year in FY 2025/26.
Nabil leads in profit; Himalayan posts biggest growth
Nabil Bank remained the most profitable commercial bank, reporting a net profit of Rs 7.91 billion, up 33.50% from Rs 5.92 billion a year earlier.
By percentage growth, however, Himalayan Bank recorded the strongest improvement. Its net profit surged 1,041% to Rs 1.48 billion from just Rs 129.7 million in the previous fiscal year.
Kumari Bank recorded the second-largest percentage increase, with profit rising 305.95% to Rs 7.39 billion from Rs 1.82 billion.
Citizens Bank International increased its net profit by 63.05% to Rs 2.10 billion, compared with Rs 1.29 billion a year earlier.
Rastriya Banijya Bank posted a 60.68% increase in profit to Rs 4.56 billion, up from Rs 2.84 billion.
Nepal Bank reported a 46.20% rise in net profit to Rs 4.50 billion, compared with Rs 3.08 billion in FY 2024/25.
NMB Bank increased its profit by 40.60% to Rs 4.01 billion from Rs 2.85 billion.
Sanima Bank posted a 38% increase to Rs 3.55 billion, compared with Rs 2.57 billion a year earlier.
Prime Commercial Bank recorded a 28.48% increase in profit to Rs 4.11 billion from Rs 3.20 billion.
Global IME Bank reported a 22.67% increase to Rs 6.23 billion, up from Rs 5.08 billion.
Nepal SBI Bank increased its net profit by 12.88% to Rs 2.04 billion from Rs 1.81 billion.
Machhapuchchhre Bank posted a 12.24% increase to Rs 2.11 billion from Rs 1.88 billion.
Everest Bank recorded a modest 4.75% increase in net profit to Rs 5.07 billion, compared with Rs 4.84 billion in the previous year.
Siddhartha Bank reported a 4.54% rise to Rs 3.52 billion from Rs 3.37 billion.
Meanwhile, NIC Asia Bank returned to profit after reporting a net loss of Rs 3.87 billion in FY 2024/25. The bank posted a net profit of Rs 181.7 million in FY 2025/26.
Four banks see profits decline
Despite the overall improvement across the banking sector, not all banks recorded positive results. Four commercial banks reported lower profits, while one bank slipped into a net loss.
Standard Chartered Bank Nepal saw its net profit fall 5.38% to Rs 2.85 billion from Rs 3.01 billion.
Laxmi Sunrise Bank reported a 23.26% decline in profit to Rs 3.12 billion from Rs 4.06 billion.
Agricultural Development Bank recorded a 29.51% decline, with net profit falling to Rs 2.63 billion from Rs 3.73 billion.
Nepal Investment Mega Bank posted a 36.58% decline in net profit to Rs 2.75 billion from Rs 4.33 billion.
Prabhu Bank was the only bank among the 20 to report a net loss. It posted a loss of Rs 241.2 million in FY 2025/26, compared with a net profit of Rs 872.3 million in the previous fiscal year.
Overall, the results point to a broad recovery in commercial-bank profitability, although the wide variation among individual institutions highlights uneven financial performance across Nepal’s banking sector.
