TOKYO: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck off Hachijo Island, some 280 km south of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Friday. The shaking was felt in the Japanese capital.
The temblor occurred at around 9:02 p.m. local time at a depth of about 60 km, measuring 3 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7 in Miyake Island and Mikura Island, the weather agency said.
The quake’s epicenter was located at a latitude of 33.7 degrees north and a longitude of 140.5 degrees east.
No tsunami warning was issued.
