KATHMANDU: Acting Chief Judge of the Janakpur High Court Tek Narayan Kunwar emerged as Nepal’s highest-performing judge in the fiscal year 2025/26 (2082/83 BS), judgments of a record 1,421 cases, according to the Supreme Court’s preliminary annual progress report.
Kunwar achieved the highest case disposal figure while serving as Chairperson of the Special Court and later as Acting Chief Judge of the Janakpur High Court, making him the country’s top-performing judge. The Supreme Court said his performance significantly strengthened judicial efficiency and improved public access to justice.
He was followed by Tika Ram Acharya, who served at the Janakpur and Patan High Courts, with 1,229 case revolves, while Jagat Bahadur Thapa, serving at the Birgunj Temporary Bench and Butwal Bench, ranked third after resolving 1,169 cases. Som Kanta Mainali of the Patan High Court and Tulsipur Bench delivered of 1,059 cases, followed by Narishwar Bhandari of the Janakpur High Court and Rajbiraj Bench and Jagadish Ghimire of the Janakpur High Court, who each resolved 1,020 cases. Gokarna Dangi of the Janakpur High Court and Birgunj Temporary Bench disposed of 982 cases, while Krishna Prasad Subedi of the Janakpur High Court and Rajbiraj Bench resolved 953 cases. Rajuram Silwal of the Janakpur High Court disposed of 940 cases, followed closely by Kailash Prasad Subedi, who served at the Janakpur and Patan High Courts, with 933 cases.
Among District Court judges, Rajendra Singh Bhandari of the Kanchanpur District Court ranked first nationwide after delivers verdict of 1,011 cases. He was followed by Madhav Prasad Ghimire of the Parsa District Court with 984 cases and Hari Prasad Sharma Upadhyay of the Palpa District Court with 979 cases. Kapil Mani Gautam of the Dhanusha District Court and Bishnu Prasad Gautam of the Gorkha District Court each resolved 879 cases, while Roshan Gajurel of the Ilam District Court disposed of 829 cases and Manoj K.C. of the Rautahat District Court resolved 827 cases.
High Courts handled a total caseload of 60,564 cases, including 20,906 carried-over cases and 39,658 new registrations, disposing of 42,614 cases for a 70.36 percent disposal rate. Against an annual target of 45,204 case disposals, the courts resolved 42,530 cases, achieving 94.08 percent of the target. At the end of the fiscal year, 17,950 cases remained pending, with no cases older than two years.
District Courts also recorded significant progress. Forty-two District Courts fixed all cases pending for more than two years, while 29 District Courts cleared every case older than 18 months. During the fiscal year, District Courts handled 251,734 cases, comprising 100,539 carried-over cases and 151,195 new filings, and disposed of 139,979 cases, achieving a 55.61 percent disposal rate. They met 79.77 percent of their annual disposal target by resolving 139,979 cases out of a target of 175,471. A total of 111,755 cases remain pending, including 7,691 cases that are more than two years old.
Specialized courts and tribunals handled 5,789 cases during the fiscal year, disposing of 2,412 cases for a 41.67 percent disposal rate. They achieved 80.35 percent of their annual target of 3,002 case disposals, while 3,377 cases remain pending, including 40 cases older than two years.
