KATHMANDU: Annapurna Rural Municipality in Myagdi has declared a public holiday in mourning for world-renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, widely known as Nims Dai.
Purja was among 10 climbers who reportedly died after being caught in an avalanche while attempting Broad Peak in Pakistan on Thursday. Efforts to recover the bodies have begun.
According to a notice issued by Rural Municipality Chairperson Bharat Kumar Pun, all offices, ward offices, health institutions and community schools under the rural municipality, except essential services, will remain closed on Monday, Shrawan 18, 2083, as a mark of tribute and respect to the deceased climbers.
The municipality said Purja’s contribution to taking Nepal’s mountaineering sector to new global heights, establishing the identity and prestige of Nepali climbers internationally, and demonstrating exceptional courage, leadership and dedication would always be remembered.
