GORKHA: The final rites of 29 people killed in Bhotekoshi-Trishuli flash floods were performed in Gorkha district on Saturday.

Of the 55 dead bodies retrieved on Gorkha side, 29 were buried at Bunkotghat on Budhigandaki riverbank in Sahid Lakhan Rural Municipality-9 in Gorkha district.

The district administration said the bodies were buried as per the procedures set by the government at the national level.

Chief District Officer of Gorkha district Tulsi Prasad Shrestha said the unidentified bodies and the recovered body parts were buried due to the lack of adequate mortuary facilities in the district. “There is a shortage of mortuary facilities in Gorkha. The final rites of those bodies that could not be ascertained were performed, as the number of bodies being recovered was increasing rise every day,” he added.

Chief District Officer Shrestha shared that the bodies were buried by collecting the DNA sample.

He said the bodies had to be buried for proper management, as keeping them there with inadequate and poorly managed mortuary facilities could pose health risks.

Shrestha added 23 bodies were intact and could potentially be identified. So far, 11 bodies have been sent to Pokhara for identification and others are kept at Province Hospital, Gorkha, and NPI Gorkha Hospital.
