Bhotekoshi–Trishuli flood insurance claims surpass Rs25.87 billion

KATHMANDU: Preliminary insurance claims arising from the devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers have surpassed Rs25.87 billion, according to data received by the Nepal Insurance Authority as of Bhadra 15. A total of 583 insurance policies have so far been reported as affected.

The biggest exposure is in engineering and contractors’ risk insurance, which alone accounts for Rs20.51 billion in preliminary claims from just 52 policies. That represents nearly 80% of the total claims, highlighting the scale of damage to hydropower, construction and major infrastructure projects.

Among individual insurers, Sanima GIC Insurance has reported claims of Rs2.10 billion across 102 policies, while Siddhartha Premier Insurance has recorded Rs1.89 billion from 67 policies.

By the number of affected policies, Shikhar Insurance leads with 127. The company has received preliminary claims worth Rs1.88 billion.

Other significant claims include Rs647.8 million from 45 policies at Himalayan Everest Insurance and Rs517 million from 66 policies at Neco Insurance. Sagarmatha Lumbini Insurance has reported Rs242.3 million from 32 policies, while Nepal Insurance has recorded Rs238.6 million from 32 policies.

IGI Prudential Insurance has reported Rs187.3 million from 26 policies, NLG Insurance Rs113.1 million from 21 policies, Prabhu Insurance Rs31.2 million from 14 policies, Rastriya Beema Company Rs7.6 million from two policies and National Insurance Rs5.3 million from two policies. Nepal Micro Insurance has reported a preliminary claim of Rs500,000 from one policy.

Motor policies most affected

By insurance category, motor insurance has the highest number of affected policies, with 313 policies generating preliminary claims of Rs1.55 billion.

Property insurance accounts for Rs2.35 billion from 113 policies, while transport insurance has generated Rs897.7 million in claims from 47 policies. Another 54 policies under other insurance categories account for Rs529.3 million.

The figures remain preliminary. The final liability could change substantially following detailed damage assessments, technical inspections and verification of individual claims.
