KATHMANDU: Concerns have grown over the timely completion of the Butwal-Gorusinge road expansion project as physical progress remains limited to 28 percent with only 14 months left in the contract period.

The project, which covers a 50-kilometer stretch, was slated for completion within three years under a contract signed in November 2024.

The project is being executed by a joint venture between China’s Shaanxi Construction Engineering Group and Nepal’s Ashish Nirman Sewa at a cost of Rs 13.55 billion. With the deadline set for November 2027, officials acknowledge that the current pace of work is insufficient to meet the target. Project information officer and engineer Ashok Paudel stated that the progress does not align with the remaining timeframe. He noted, “It appears difficult to complete the work within the stipulated time. The construction company is preparing to increase the pace of work by deploying additional manpower and equipment after the monsoon.”

The project involves 25-kilometer sections in both Rupandehi and Kapilvastu districts. Ongoing works include the construction of bridges, culverts, underpasses, drains, and wildlife crossings. In Kapilvastu, nine out of ten planned bridges are under construction, while 56 out of 67 culverts are being built in Rupandehi. Progress has been hampered by delays in relocating electricity poles and challenges in managing construction materials like soil and riverbed resources. The project management is prioritizing the removal of these obstacles to accelerate construction.

The Butwal-Gorusinge road is a vital commercial and transport corridor in Lumbini Province, serving as a key route for cross-border trade with India. The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce the risk of accidents, which have been persistent issues due to the narrow width of the current road.
