KATHMANDU: China will send DNA experts and modern equipment to Nepal to help identify people missing or killed in the Bhotekoshi River floods.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular press conference on Tuesday that China would deploy an expert team to support Nepal’s ongoing search and rescue operations.
Some bodies recovered from the flood have been severely damaged after remaining in the water for an extended period, making identification through conventional methods difficult. DNA testing is expected to help authorities establish the identities of the dead and missing.
China is preparing to send a team of DNA identification specialists along with advanced testing technology and equipment. It will also provide drones for search and rescue operations and water-purification equipment for flood-affected areas, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The identification of recovered bodies and the search for those still missing have become major challenges following the disaster. The Chinese assistance is expected to strengthen Nepal’s search, rescue and identification efforts.
