Consumers flock to subsidized shops in Dang ahead of festivals

A A+ A-

GHORAHI: Consumer interest in government-run subsidized shops has increased in Ghorahi, Dang, as the Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath festivals approach.

The Salt Trading Corporation Limited facility has seen a surge in shoppers seeking essential commodities.

Shoppers are drawn to the store due to prices being lower than the general market. Nirmala Magar, a resident of Ghorahi-15, noted that purchasing goods at subsidized rates provides significant relief.

According to Rambabu Prasad Gupta, head of Salt Trading in Ghorahi, the shop now serves more than 300 customers daily.

Sugar is priced at Rs 100 per kg and salt at Rs 24 per kg at the subsidized outlet. In the open market, sugar is reportedly selling for approximately Rs 140 per kg, while salt costs Rs 30 per kg. To prevent shortages and ensure fair access, the corporation has limited individual purchases to a maximum of 6 kg of salt and 6 kg of sugar per visit.

The subsidized shops, which opened on Sept. 17, will remain operational until Nov. 16. Beyond Ghorahi, Salt Trading has established similar outlets in Birtamod, Biratnagar, Rajbiraj, Lahan, Janakpur, Birgunj, Hetauda, Narayangarh, Trishuli, Pokhara, and Baglung. The initiative aims to provide relief to consumers by mitigating potential price hikes of essential goods during the festival season.
