KATHMANDU: CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has alleged that the current government is operating under the influence and plans of those who ‘hijacked’ the ‘Gen Z movement’ rather than following the actual sentiments of the youth.
Pokharel made these remarks in a statement issued to commemorate the youth who lost their lives during the movement, marking one year since the incident. He expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and paid tribute to those who died.
Pokharel stated that the issues raised by the youth, including corruption control, good governance, accessible public service delivery, and the unrestricted use of social media, are legitimate and matters of common concern.
He analyzed that the youth took to the streets because the previous government failed to clarify its policy on registering social media platforms, which was intended for regulation rather than a ban.
Claiming that there was a major conspiracy to incite violence during the peaceful protests, Pokharel said, “Identifying the planners and conspirators who infiltrated or caused others to infiltrate the peaceful protests and bringing them under the scope of legal action is the real way to respect the spirit of the ‘Gen Z movement’.”
The general secretary clarified that the CPN (UML) stands with the youth and remains committed to moving forward by correcting any past weaknesses in addressing their concerns.
Emphasizing that ensuring good governance and establishing the rule of law are the primary needs of the day, he reiterated that the party is always prepared to address the legitimate demands of the youth.
