Death toll from Bhotekoshi flood climbs to 1,290 so far

KATHMANDU: The bodies of 1,290 people, out of those killed in Bhotekoshi flash flood, have been recovered so far. Similarly, 4,798 people are still missing after flood.

Spokesperson at the Nepal Police Headquarters, Deputy Inspector General Abi Narayan Kafle shared that out of the recovered bodies, 32 were of children, 250 of women and 427 of men while 532 were with partial organs. Two of them died in course of treatment in hospital.

Among the missing include 2,369 men and 478 women, added police. Kafle shared that police have continued the process for identifying and managing bodies recovered from different flood-hit areas.

According to Nepal Police Headquarters, 8,197 people have been rescued alive so far. Of them, 4,618 are men and 2,472 women.

Likewise, 1,055 foreigners and 52 unidentified persons have been so far rescued alive, according to the records maintained at the police headquarters.

As informed, DNA samples of 1,143 deceased and 711 relatives of deceased have been collected to ease the identification process. Police added that 926 bodies have been buried safely so far. —
