Death toll from Himlung Himal avalanche reaches 11

KATHMANDU: The death toll from the avalanche at Himlung Himal in Manang has reached 11 after rescue teams recovered four more bodies. The search and rescue operation is being conducted by a team from the Nepal National Mountaineering and Mountaineering Guide Association.

Rescue team leader Pasang Kaji Sherpa confirmed that four additional bodies were located and that efforts to extract them from the snow are currently underway. The identities of the deceased have not yet been established. Previously, the bodies of Ash Gurung, Suraj Rai and Padam Magar were recovered on Wednesday. Before that, the bodies of Birendra Gurung, Ghanshyam Rai, Chhevi Bhote and Pasang Bhote were found on Sunday and Monday.

The avalanche struck Himlung Himal in Narphabhumi Rural Municipality-5, Manang, on Sept. 27. A total of 16 climbers were reported missing following the incident. While 11 climbers were contacted on the second day after the disaster, five climbers and support staff remain missing. Search operations are ongoing to locate the remaining individuals, according to Sherpa.
