BHAKTAPUR: Bhaktapur-based Shahid Dharma Bhakta National Transplant Center has successfully performed 202 kidney transplants during the fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26), marking another major achievement in organ transplant services.
The center stated that it remains the leading institution in Nepal in terms of the highest number of kidney transplants performed annually.
Executive Director and senior nephrologist Dr. Kalpana Kumari Shrestha said the achievement was the result of the tireless efforts of doctors, nurses, and staff directly and indirectly involved in transplant services.
“Every successful transplant marks the beginning of a new life, a new hope, and a new future,” she said, expressing gratitude to all patients and families who have placed their trust in the center.
For many years, the center was led by senior transplant surgeon Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha, who retired in the first week of last Asoj. Hospital officials said the new leadership team has continued the momentum he established in the field of organ transplantation.
According to Information Officer Harihar Pokharel, six of the 202 kidney transplants were performed using organs donated by brain-dead donors.
The center is currently headed by Dr. Kalpana Kumari Shrestha, while the transplant program is being led by Dr. Lusan Singh, with strong support from Dr. Dipesh Shrestha.
Doctors Hari Baral, Rojan Adhikari, Sat Prasad Nepal and Rupesh Jha have also been actively involved in transplant procedures. Similarly, Dr. Sumit Acharya, Dr. Rubas Nath Yogi and Dr. Anurag Singh have been closely supporting the transplant campaign.
The hospital also acknowledged the significant contribution of the anesthesiology team, including Dr. Aarti, Dr. Nibha, Dr. Rekha, Dr. Sovit, Dr. Shiva and Dr. Riti.
In addition, the transplant coordinators’ team comprising Dr. Niru, Tara, Saru Koju and Paja Khadka, along with the radiology department and the team led by Dr. Krishna Budhathoki, played an important role in the success of the program.
The center described the achievement as a reflection of the growing capacity of Nepal’s public health system in advanced organ transplantation and a sign of continued progress in providing life-saving treatment to patients with end-stage kidney disease.
