Durga Prasai accuses Dhawal Shamsher Rana of opposing monarchy return

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: Durga Prasai has accused Dr. Dhawal Shamsher Rana of opposing the restoration of the monarchy, exposing deep internal differences as the two leaders prepared to form a unified political party.

Speaking in an interview with YouTube channel Hamro Sandesh, Prasai expressed outrage over Rana’s recent television interview in which Rana stated that former Crown Prince Dipendra carried out the royal massacre. Demanding an apology, Prasai claimed the statement weakened the royal institution and likened Rana’s views to those of Maoist leaders Prachanda and Baburam Bhattarai, even suggesting American intelligence agency CIA influence within their movement.

Prasai further claimed that historically Ranas do not favor a monarchy due to lingering resentment over losing power in 1951, alleging that as long as Ranas remain dominant, the monarchy will not return.

The rift also highlighted disputes over the timing of registering their new political party. Prasai indicated that unity efforts had faltered after Rana’s faction rushed to register the party immediately, despite Prasai advocating for a delay of 15 to 20 days.
