KATHMANDU: The Ebola outbreak spreading across Africa has reached Nigeria. A woman who arrived from Uganda has tested positive for the virus, while the number of confirmed cases in Kenya has risen to 9.
Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate stated that the infected woman is currently in isolation and receiving treatment. Authorities have identified 44 individuals who had contact with the patient and have placed them under surveillance.
This marks the first confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria since 2014. Meanwhile, the outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May has infected more than 9,000 people and resulted in 4,381 deaths. Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, described the outbreak as a serious threat.
He has urged the international community to provide financial aid, medical supplies, and health personnel. In Kenya, the ninth case was confirmed in a close family member of the first patient. Conversely, Uganda has reported that there are currently no active cases of the virus within its borders.
