KATHMANDU: Education and Sports Minister and government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel has ruled out any immediate amendment to Nepal’s Education Regulations, saying teachers will continue to be required to serve at least three years at their current schools before becoming eligible for transfer.

Speaking at an interaction with members of the Education Journalists Group on Friday, Pokharel said the government has no plans to revise the existing transfer provisions simply to accommodate demands for earlier transfers.

“Teachers must serve at least three years at their current school. The Education Regulations cannot be amended immediately based solely on demands for transfers before completing that period,” he said.

The minister also confirmed that the government will retain the two-day public weekend, with holidays on Saturday and Sunday.

Acknowledging that the policy has not been universally popular, Pokharel said the government has decided to continue the arrangement after considering its overall impact and necessity.

“We know the Saturday-Sunday weekend is not popular with everyone, but it will continue. It will not be withdrawn,” he said.

Pokharel said the government remains committed to improving the education sector through policy stability, better management and reforms, adding that teacher management will continue to be guided by the existing legal framework.
