BRUSSELS: The European Union has allocated €2 million in humanitarian aid to support victims of devastating flash floods in Nepal, with the funding aimed at meeting urgent needs including food, healthcare, clean water, sanitation and shelter.
EU-funded humanitarian partners are already providing assistance on the ground. The new emergency funding comes in addition to nearly €3 million in humanitarian aid allocated by the EU to Nepal earlier this year to strengthen disaster preparedness.
EU-funded partners began responding immediately after the floods, using pre-positioned shelter materials and relief supplies to assist affected communities.
The EU is also deploying its Rapid Response Coordinator for Asia to help coordinate the bloc’s humanitarian response.
To support Nepal’s local response and improve situational awareness, the EU has activated the Copernicus satellite service, which will provide satellite-based maps of flood-affected areas.
EU Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said the floods had devastated communities already recovering from previous disasters.
“Roads washed away. Villages cut off. Families searching for missing loved ones. The flash floods in Nepal have shattered communities already rebuilding from past disasters,” Lahbib said. “The EU stands with them, allocating €2 million to bring urgent healthcare, food, water and shelter.”
Earlier Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with those affected by the floods in a post on X.
“My heart goes out to all those affected by the devastating flash floods,” von der Leyen said. “Europe is allocating €2 million in immediate humanitarian aid for Nepal to deliver life-saving assistance to families and communities hit hardest. Europe stands with you.”
