KATHMANDU: European Union Ambassador to Nepal Véronique Lorenzo held a meeting with Dr. Dharmaraj Upreti, executive chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), to discuss disaster risk reduction, climate change impacts and risk transfer in Nepal.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed disaster risk reduction and management projects being implemented with support from the European Union and discussed Nepal’s broader disaster management priorities.

Dr. Upreti thanked the EU for its continued support to Nepal’s disaster risk reduction and management efforts and expressed confidence that cooperation in the sector would be further expanded in the coming days.

Ambassador Lorenzo said the European Union would continue supporting efforts to assess emerging risks in the high Himalayan region, including the growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) linked to climate change.

She also highlighted the importance of using science and technology to protect vulnerable communities and strengthening Nepal’s institutional capacity for disaster risk reduction.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Nepal and the European Union to improve preparedness, risk assessment and resilience against increasingly complex climate and disaster-related risks.
