KATHMANDU: The devastating flood in Rasuwa has swept away around 200 containers from the yard of the Customs Office at Timure, according to the Nepal Himalaya Trans-Himalayan Commerce Association.
Ang Dorje Sherpa, secretary of the association, said preliminary information indicated that around 200 containers stored at the customs yard had been washed away by the flood.
Another 300 or so containers lined up along the route to China to collect goods were also caught in the flooding.
“Only around 10 percent of the containers may be left. My brothers in Timure have informed me that the village itself has been swept away,” Sherpa told Nepal Khabar. “The containers were lined up one after another. There is virtually no road left on the route toward China.”
Sherpa said he had received information that a helicopter had reached the affected area and rescued around seven to eight injured people, who were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.
The flood situation in the Timure area, where the customs office is located, has eased somewhat, while telephone services have gradually started to resume, he said.
Association President Ramhari Karki also said hundreds of containers and a large number of people had been caught in the flood. He said the sudden surge of floodwater had caused extensive loss of life and property in the area.
The full extent of the damage to the Timure border point, a key route for Nepal-China trade, is yet to be assessed.
