Floods damage Rahughat hydropower project, transmission lines in Myagdi

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: Heavy rains and subsequent floods in the Kaligandaki River on Sept. 26 have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure and transmission lines in Myagdi district.

The 40-megawatt Rahughat hydropower project, which had recently commenced test production, sustained damage after floodwaters destroyed its tailrace gate and entered the powerhouse, damaging two pieces of equipment. The project’s switchyard is also at high risk due to riverbank erosion.

Raghuganga Hydropower managing director Ganesh KC stated that power generation has been suspended just two days after the project began test production. The electricity generated was connected to the national grid last Wednesday. While the project was preparing for commercial production following a 15-day testing phase, the damage caused by the flood means commercial operations will be delayed by at least one month, according to KC.

Separately, the floods destroyed three towers of the 220 kV Dana-Kusma transmission line along the Kaligandaki corridor. Roshan Khadka, chief of the Nepal Electricity Authority’s Pokhara Grid Division, confirmed that two towers were swept away in Doba and one in Dhirchyang, both located in Annapurna Rural Municipality-1. The damage has halted transmission from the Rahughat switchyard to Dana.

The disruption has cut off power supply from several projects in Narchyang, Annapurna Rural Municipality-4, including the 5 MW Ghale-mdi Khola, 42 MW Mistri Khola, 38 MW Nilgiri-1, 71 MW Nilgiri-2, and 6 MW Rele Khola hydropower projects. A technical team from the Nepal Electricity Authority’s Pokhara Grid Division has been deployed to the site to assess the damage. Khadka stated that the team is currently collecting details of the destruction and exploring alternative measures to restore power supply while initiating reconstruction efforts.
