KATHMANDU: Heavy rainfall has caused the Narayani river to overflow, leading to widespread flooding in ward 5 of Susta rural municipality in West Nawalparasi.
The floods have impacted several settlements, including Tharu Tole, Sainik Tole, Badki Tole, and Camp Tole. Local reports indicate that approximately 250 houses are submerged, affecting over 220 families.
The Armed Police Force BOP Susta has been conducting rescue operations, relocating residents and livestock to a holding center.
On Friday, 78 families from Tharu Tole were moved, followed by another 85 families from Sainik and Badki Tole during the night. So far, 163 individuals have been relocated to safer areas, including community buildings and the homes of neighbors on higher ground.
The water level in the Narayani river continues to rise, increasing the risk of further flooding. Official records show the discharge at the Gandak barrage reached 280,000 cusecs on Saturday, a sharp increase from 92,000 cusecs recorded on Friday morning.
Residents also reported that the river’s erosion has swept away a cotton tree that served as a marker for the Nepal-India border. Security personnel remain deployed in the affected areas to assist with ongoing rescue and relocation efforts.
