KATHMANDU: The government has commenced printing driver’s licenses using the Electronic Driving License and Vehicle Registration System (EDL VRS), which was officially implemented on July 1.
The Department of Transport Management, under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, adopted this technology to address long-standing backlogs and high service demand.
The new system is expected to make the process of obtaining or renewing licenses faster and more technology-friendly. Under this process, applicant details entered into the EDL VRS are sent directly to the Security Printing Center. Once printing is complete, the licenses are dispatched to the relevant transportation management offices via post. This workflow is designed to reduce the delays that have historically affected license distribution.
In the first phase, 3,081 licenses for Madhesh Province have already been printed and sent to the respective offices for distribution. The new arrangement allows provincial governments to print licenses independently by entering into agreements with the Security Printing Center. Madhesh Province has already initiated its own printing process, and the Lumbini Province government also began its process after signing an agreement on Friday. In cases where provincial governments do not reach such an agreement, the Department of Transport Management and the Security Printing Center will coordinate directly to ensure licenses are printed for service recipients.
