SUNSARI: The Government of Nepal has reached a seven-point agreement with the families of two youths killed in the July 25 shooting incident in Devanganj Rural Municipality-3, Sunsari, paving the way for the official martyr declaration process and compensation for the bereaved families.

The agreement was signed late Thursday night between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the families of the deceased, Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta. Home Minister Sudhan Gurung personally signed the agreement on behalf of the government.

Under the agreement, the government will immediately initiate the process to declare Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta as martyrs. It will also provide compensation of NPR 1 million to each of the victims’ families.

The government has further committed to conducting an impartial and effective investigation into the shooting and ensuring that those found responsible are brought to justice in accordance with the law. In addition, one eligible member from each bereaved family will be provided with employment opportunities.

The agreement also states that the recommendations of the investigation committee formed to examine the incident will be implemented as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the government has agreed to construct a memorial park at an appropriate location in coordination with the local government to commemorate the two victims.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the victims’ families by the parents of Om Prakash Mehta and Naresh Mehta, the guardian of Jay Prakash Mehta, while Home Minister Sudhan Gurung signed on behalf of the Government of Nepal.

Meanwhile, the final rites of Om Prakash Mehta and Jay Prakash Mehta are scheduled to be performed at 2:00 p.m. today.
