KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Food Safety has initiated discussions on developing a legal and regulatory framework to ensure the safe, quality and well-regulated delivery of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) services in the country.

At a meeting chaired by Health and Food Safety Minister Nisha Mehta on Friday, officials reviewed the current state of IVF services in Nepal, including existing infrastructure, service standards and regulatory oversight.

The meeting discussed drafting operational guidelines for IVF clinics as an immediate regulatory measure, while also considering a separate law to provide a long-term legal framework governing IVF services.

Minister Mehta said clear legal provisions are essential to safeguard patients, ensure quality treatment and uphold ethical standards in the sensitive field of reproductive healthcare.

She said the ministry is committed to preventing potential irregularities in IVF services while expanding access to safe and responsible fertility treatment.

Participants also discussed strengthening minimum operating standards, monitoring mechanisms and licensing procedures for IVF service providers.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Shri Prasad Adhikari, Dr. Jyoti Thapa and Dr. Binita Thapa.
