KATHMANDU: Meteorologist Binod Pokharel has warned of heavy rainfall and potential snowfall across Nepal starting this Thursday, with conditions expected to persist for three to four days.
The weather pattern is driven by a low-pressure system developing in the Bay of Bengal, combined with an active western disturbance.
The system is expected to track through the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and reach Nepal around October 27, or 28. Cloud cover is anticipated as early as Tuesday, with rainfall likely beginning Thursday night.
Between October 29 and November 1, parts of Bagmati Province may experience over 150 millimeters of rainfall. Significant precipitation is also expected in select areas of Koshi and Gandaki provinces.
Authorities have identified 29 districts, primarily across Lumbini, Gandaki, Bagmati, and Koshi provinces, as being at high risk due to the potential for prolonged or intense rainfall.
Meteorologist Pokharel specifically emphasized the need for caution in Manang, noting that the region’s vulnerability to landslides could be exacerbated by heavy rain.
The combination of significant moisture from the Bay of Bengal and an upper-atmospheric trough is expected to intensify the weather system, particularly over Nepal’s hilly and mountainous regions.
While the impact is expected to be relatively lower in Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces, the overall forecast remains subject to change. Officials have advised the public to monitor updated weather reports as the situation develops.
