SUNSARI: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung is chairing a high-level security meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs following the deadly communal violence in Dewanganj, Sunsari, on Monday night.

The meeting is focused on assessing the deteriorating security situation, measures to restore public order, the deployment of the Nepal Army for curfew enforcement, the recall of senior security commanders from Sunsari and Koshi Province, and the potential risk of further Hindu-Muslim communal tensions.

Among those attending the meeting are Home Secretary Raj Kumar Shrestha; Lieutenant General Pradeep Jung K.C. of the Nepal Army; Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki; Armed Police Force Inspector General Narayan Dutta Poudel; Chief Investigation Director of the National Investigation Department Tekendra Karki; and Additional Inspector General of Nepal Police Himalaya Shrestha, who oversees operations.

At least two people have been killed and around two dozen others injured in the violence in Sunsari. The Nepal Army has been deployed to support security forces in enforcing the curfew and preventing further unrest.

Meanwhile, concerns are growing over the government’s crisis management. Observers warn that the Prime Minister’s apparent reluctance to hold direct security briefings with the country’s top security chiefs, and an overreliance on advisers instead of institutional security assessments, could further complicate efforts to contain the situation.
