KATHMANDU: Lawmakers speaking during a meeting of the House of Representatives today called for a correction of a statement related to the border issue.
They wanted the statement the Prime Minister made in Parliament regarding the border on June 14 corrected.
As soon as the House of Representatives meeting began, opposition party MPs stood up from their seats to show their protest, so the Speaker gave time to them to speak according to party lines.
In the meeting, Nepali Congress MP Renuka Kaucha said that there has been no clear response yet regarding the statement given by the Prime Minister about the border issue.
Communist Party of Nepal (UML) MP Nita Ghatani said that we should be serious when talking about the country’s borders and mentioned that addresses to the nation from the Prime Minister should be made through government media.
Nepali Communist Party (NCP) MP Ganesh Bishwakarma expressed that the government should give a clear answer regarding the Nepal-India border. He also demanded that the demands of Dalits, emancipated bonded laborers, landless Dalits, and microfinance victims be addressed through negotiations.
MP Bishwakarma commented that it is not according to the law for the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee to summon an international human rights organization to its meeting for an explanation.
Shram Sanskriti Party lawmaker Dhurba Raj Rai said that the government’s stance on the country’s borders should be clarified by the head of the government.
Rastriya Prajatantra Party MP Saraswati Lama said that Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multicultural country and requested that all religious institutions be registered according to the law and adopt financial transparency.
Government’s attention drawn on various issues
Meanwhile, the MPs have pointed out to the government that floods and landslides have caused damage to life and property in different parts of the country and disrupted movement, calling for effective action to find solutions.
They also stressed on paying attention to road safety, regular monitoring of child correction homes, ensuring regular supply of cooking gas, reconsidering the government’s decision to merge Nepal Intermodal Transport Development Board and Nepal Transit Warehouse Company Limited.
Speaking during the urgent session of today’s House of Representatives meeting, they mentioned that farmers have finished planting and are waiting for chemical fertilizers, and urged the government to arrange immediate fertilizer supply.
The MPs also urged the government to take effective steps on prevention of disasters like flooding, landslides and the like, providing subsidies and compensation to farmers, resolving the landless squatter problem, addressing the problem of Nepali migrant workers in foreign countries, and resolve the problem of overcrowding at prisons.
Those airing their views on this line were Ashish Gajurel, Indira Rana Magar, Parbati BK, Prakash Singh Karki, Samikshya Banskota, Ashika Tamang, Ramesh Malla, Bodh Narayan Shrestha, Tahir Ali Bhat, Prakash Pathak, Rajendra Kumar Rai and Kamini Kumari.
