KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives meeting was adjourned on Thursday until Aug. 4, five days after lawmakers from both the opposition and the ruling side raised serious questions over the Kaptaanganj incident in Sunsari.

Speaker D.P. Aryal informed lawmakers that the next meeting would be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The session, the first after a two-week gap, was dominated by demands for government accountability over the unrest that began in Sunsari on July 25 and has since spread across parts of the Madhes.

With the violence showing little sign of subsiding and the death toll having reached three, pressure has mounted on Prime Minister Balen Shah and Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, who have yet to make a substantive public response. Lawmakers demanded that the government take responsibility and answer in Parliament, but the adjournment pushed the debate back by another five days.
The crisis has also triggered calls for a high-level investigation, while some lawmakers and political voices have gone further, arguing that the prime minister and the home minister should resign on moral grounds.
