Jitiya Nirjala fast concludes

A A+ A-

JANAKPUR: The Jitiya Nirjala fasting that is observed by mothers in Janakpur, wishing for the longevity, good health and prosperity of their children, concluded today.

The three-day rigorous fasting as part of the Jitiya Festival had begun on Friday night with women having their traditional meal (also known as Ongathan).

On Saturday, they observed a strict Nirjala fast, abstaining from food and water throughout the day and night.

They also gathered to worship Jitmaha also known as the virtuous son Jitbahan, and listened to the story of his life and virtues. Through prayers and rituals, they wished for the long life, health and wellbeing of their children.

The fast came to an end on Sunday morning. After taking a ritual bath, the women ended their fast by traditionally consuming fruits, grains and other customary cuisines.

Jitiya is mainly celebrated by the Maithili community in the Mithila and Terai-Madhes regions, as well as in cities such as Kathmandu. It is considered as one for the most demanding traditional fasts, with women abstaining from both food and water for entire day and night.
