BIRATNAGAR: Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has secured a vote of confidence from the Provincial Assembly.
At Monday’s Provincial Assembly meeting, 57 lawmakers voted in favour of the confidence motion presented by Chief Minister Karki, while 22 voted against it, Speaker Ammar Bahadur Bista announced.
Members of the CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party voted in favour of the motion, while lawmakers from the Nepali Congress voted against it.
The Koshi Provincial Assembly has 40 UML members and 17 members from the Nepali Communist Party. Lawmakers from both parties supported Karki.
Members of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) remained neutral during the vote. The party has five members in the Koshi Provincial Assembly, including the Speaker. Nirmala Limbu, the sole lawmaker from the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), was absent from the meeting.
The Koshi Provincial Assembly initially had 93 members, but its strength has now fallen to 92 following the resignation of one member. A total of 83 lawmakers were present at Monday’s meeting. Karki needed at least 47 votes to secure a majority. With 57 votes in his favour, he has secured the Provincial Assembly’s support to continue leading the Koshi Province government.
