KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has imposed a total ban on the sale of plastic flowers and decorative items. The metropolitan city’s environment management department issued a notice stating that the move aims to reduce environmental damage caused by the use of plastic garlands and floral bouquets during festivals like Tihar.
In accordance with the Environment Protection Act, 2076, the production, import, sale, distribution, and storage of plastic garlands and bouquets are strictly prohibited across Nepal. The metropolitan authority warned that any plastic floral items found being sold or used for decoration will be confiscated, and violators will face legal action under the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Environment and Natural Resources Protection Act, 2077, and other prevailing financial laws.
To support local farmers and ensure a market for Nepali products, the metropolitan city has designated 33 specific locations for the sale of domestic flowers. This initiative, which has been in place since 2080, aims to reduce reliance on imported flowers and prioritize local produce.
The designated sales sites include areas such as Lagantole, Jaisideval, Bhrikutimandap, Swayambhu Dharma Chakra Park, Kalimati, Bhatbhateni in Kalanki, Naya Bazar, Machhapokhari, Handigaun, Salesberry in Maharajgunj, Big Mart in Gongabu, Chappal Karkhana, Baluwatar, Tinkune Chaur, and Sifal Chaur.
Chief of the Metropolitan Police Force, Bishnu Prasad Joshi, stated that the police will facilitate the management of these sales centers.
