KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Police have identified 12 major security challenges facing the capital, including rising cybercrime, AI-driven misinformation, weak data integration and a shortage of forensic and cybercrime experts.
According to the police, the city’s highly mobile population makes identification, surveillance and tracking of suspects difficult. Authorities also cited the lack of reliable databases on rental tenants, guesthouses and hostels, difficulties accessing data related to crimes operated from abroad, and security risks posed by escaped prisoners and stolen firearms.
Other concerns include poor inter-agency coordination, the absence of an integrated data system, inadequate CCTV coverage, traffic management challenges, limited forensic capacity and a shortage of skilled personnel in cybercrime and forensic investigations.
Speaking at a press conference, Kathmandu Police Chief SSP Dilip Ghimire said the force has been reforming its services to meet public expectations following the Gen-Z protests. He said the police are working to make service delivery more efficient, transparent and citizen-friendly while adopting a zero-tolerance policy toward unnecessary bureaucracy, favoritism and corruption.
