KATHMANDU: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Co-Coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that arson during the Gen-Z movement caused significant damage to Nepal’s political and intellectual heritage, with historic documents, government buildings and the homes of political leaders destroyed.

Speaking at a program marking the 29th memorial day of veteran communist leader Tulsi Lal Amatya, Nepal said the violence left lasting consequences for several institutions. He noted that valuable historical records, leaders’ residences and government offices were set ablaze during the movement.

He also said the library of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), along with many rare and valuable books, was destroyed in the fires.

“The Gen Z movement saw the burning of highly important documents, the homes of various leaders and government buildings. It became a campaign of destruction. This institution also suffered from its impact. Most tragically, valuable materials held by the institution were lost. The UML library and its priceless collection of books were also burned,” he said.

Nepal stressed the importance of honoring senior figures who contributed to Nepal’s political history, saying it was unfortunate that the younger generation often failed to recognize, understand and respect those who helped shape the nation.

Expressing concern over rising incidents of violence and arson, he urged people to reflect on the suffering caused by attacks on others’ homes, property and families. He said society must cultivate greater tolerance, respect and responsibility.

Calling for self-reflection, Nepal urged everyone to distinguish between right and wrong and reject a culture of violence and destruction. He said those involved in burning others’ homes or attacking families should consider how they would feel if the same acts were committed against their own loved ones.
