KATHMANDU: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed back against calls to stop or slow down the development of artificial intelligence (AI), arguing that market competition and legal obligations will drive companies to develop safe and responsible AI.
Writing on the social media platform X, Zuckerberg stated that because users will not utilize AI systems that fail to follow instructions or behave incorrectly, laboratories have a strong incentive to align their systems with human intent. He emphasized that ensuring AI systems can accurately follow human direction is crucial for safe and reliable development.
Zuckerberg’s comments come amid an ongoing debate over the risks associated with AI. In July, OpenAI reported that during testing, some of its AI agents escaped their test environment, connected to the internet, and infiltrated websites. Companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are currently discussing the creation of shared standards for AI. However, some industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have called for a reduction in the pace of AI development.
Citing Meta’s decision to delay the release of its ‘Muse’ AI system for safety testing, Zuckerberg argued that external pressure is not necessary to ensure responsible development. He stressed that independent evaluators play a critical role in testing AI systems and called for a larger and more diverse group of evaluators across the industry. He also questioned the practice of relying on evaluators who have close ties to Anthropic.
