KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam has objected to the views recently expressed by international human rights organizations, saying their statements amount to an attack on Nepal’s sovereignty.

Speaking at a meeting of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee, Minister Gautam described the claims made by three international organizations regarding an alleged attempt to impeach judges as “fabricated” and challenged them to provide evidence. She said the government should seek proof from the organizations and stressed that Nepal’s sovereignty cannot be subject to external criticism or negotiation.

The minister accused the organizations of trying to politicize Nepal’s internal affairs. Expressing dissatisfaction that the statements were issued without any coordination or discussion with the government, she said the organizations had created a misleading narrative that could generate confusion among the public. According to her, institutions operating in Nepal should not contribute to distrust within Nepali society.

Gautam also reiterated the government’s commitment to judicial independence. She argued that differences of opinion among the judiciary, executive and legislature are part of democratic practice and should not be interpreted as interference in the judiciary. “The government has not exerted any pressure on the judiciary; this is merely a misconception,” she said.

Stating that elected representatives are accountable to the people, the minister said judicial reform remains a priority for the government. She noted that while public judgment would come after five years, the government is currently serious about improving the judicial system.

Her remarks came after several international human rights organizations issued statements expressing concern over Nepal’s judiciary and transitional justice process.
