KATHMANDU: The Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco in Nepal celebrated Morocco’s National Day in Kathmandu on Sunday on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne.
The celebrations began with a flag-hoisting ceremony held at the Consulate General in Thapathali. Morocco’s Ambassador to Nepal, Mohammed Maliki, and Honorary Consul General of Morocco in Nepal, Megha Chaudhary, jointly hoisted the Moroccan national flag.
To mark the occasion, a one-day exhibition with free public entry was organized at The Plaza in Lalitpur to promote Morocco’s rich cultural heritage, history and tourism. The exhibition featured Moroccan cuisine, traditional pottery, decorative items and information desks related to tourism and travel.
Honorary Consul General Megha Chaudhary expressed confidence that the program would help further strengthen bilateral relations, trade, cooperation and cultural exchange between Nepal and Morocco.
She also announced that Morocco had recently simplified its visa process for Nepali citizens. Under the new arrangement, applicants can obtain a recommendation letter from the Consulate General in Kathmandu and submit their visa applications from Nepal through VFS Global, eliminating the need for Nepalis to travel to India solely for visa processing.
Speaking at the event, Chaudhary thanked distinguished guests, members of the diplomatic community and supporters for their presence. She said diplomacy is built not only through formal engagement but also through friendship, mutual respect and cultural understanding, and expressed hope that Nepal-Morocco relations would continue to deepen and bring greater cooperation, prosperity and goodwill to both peoples.
Special guest Dr. Bharat Jagdeo, Vice President of Guyana, praised the cultural diversity of both countries and the hospitality of the Nepali people. He noted that with diplomatic relations already established, the two countries should now focus on expanding cooperation in tourism.
Jagdeo also said the presence of the head of the Moroccan Tourism Authority was symbolic and expressed confidence that meetings between Moroccan representatives and the Nepal Tourism Board would help elevate people-to-people relations and tourism exchange to a new level.
The event also featured the national anthems of both countries and was attended by representatives of Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, heads of diplomatic missions and members of the business community.
