MYAGDI: The construction of the much awaited Rahughat hydropower project in Myagdi has been completed. The physical construction and equipment installation work of the 40-MW Rahughat hydropower project, which is owned by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and by Raghuganga Hydropower, a subsidiary of the Nepal Government, has been completed.
Ganesh KC, Managing Director of Raghuganga Hydropower, informed that the Rahughat hydropower project is preparing for power generation. “The testing of the dam, descender, tunnel, and switchyard has been successful,” he said.
The testing of another 20 MW unit has also been started from Sunday. Manager KC further informed that it will take a week to 10 days for the trail power generation and the work is being carried out at a faster pace with the goal of starting power generation.
Dam at the foot of Raghuganga-4, Dagnam and Ward No. 5 Jhin, the six kilometres and 270 meters long main tunnel and two water retention ponds have been tested. The testing of the installed equipment has been started after the completion of the power house construction in Tilkenichaur.
To connect the electricity produced by the project to the central transmission line, the switchyard constructed in the power plant premises has been operational since June 8 this year.
Indian civil contractor company Jaiprakash Associates (JP) signed a contract worth Rs 6 billion. Initial agreement was signed on November 17, 2017, with a 45-month completion target but its time line was extended in February 2022 for the first time and then it was extended in June 2024 as well.
However it could not get materialized the construction in time so the deadline was again extended for the third time in July 2025 targeting the completion by November 27, 2025. Now, it is extended for the fourth time and is near to meeting the completion goals.
Harish Agrawal, the project manager from the contractor company JP, explained that the construction faced delays due to various natural disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic, floods, and landslides, as well as a shortage of river-based construction materials.
Raghuganga Hydropower Limited (RGHPL) was established in March 2017 with the objective of producing 40 MW of electricity in the Myagdi District of Gandaki Province, now is meeting its goal.
