KATHMANDU: Nepal has exported the medicinal herb chiraito to China through the Hilsa border crossing for the first time in an official capacity.
The herb, which is cultivated in the mid-hills of Nepal, was cleared for export following the acquisition of quarantine documentation from the Department of Customs in Kathmandu.
Namkha Rural Municipality Chairman Prem Bahadur Lama confirmed that this marks the first formal export of the herb through the Hilsa transit point.
As there is no quarantine facility currently established at Hilsa, traders were required to obtain the necessary clearance documents from Kathmandu to facilitate the cross-border shipment.
Ramraj Jaisi, head of the Yari Customs Office, stated that the consignment was transported from Surkhet to Simikot and then to the Hilsa border via Nepali trucks.
Upon reaching the border, the chiraito was transferred into Chinese trucks for transport to Taklakot in China.
This development represents a significant step in formalizing trade routes for local medicinal products through the northern border.
