KATHMANDU: The Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti) has announced that it will revive its original name and ideological identity following an agreement between rival factions to pursue separate political paths.

The party said it would initiate the necessary legal procedures at the Election Commission to restore its original name, replacing the Progressive Democratic Party, which was adopted after a political merger.

Under the agreement, the faction led by Santosh Pariyar will register a new political party under the name Progressive Democratic Party, while the existing Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti), led by Durga Sob, will retain the party’s registered “Eye” election symbol.

The party said it remains committed to promoting an alternative political force in Nepal based on its ideology of Scientific Humanism and the principles of sovereignty, federalism, good governance, prosperity and progressive socialism.

Durga Sob described the agreement as an example of democratic political culture, saying both sides would respect each other’s political identity and organisational independence while continuing cooperation on issues of national interest, democracy, the Constitution and social justice.

The party also urged its leaders, supporters and the public to rely only on official information and continue supporting its campaign for alternative politics in Nepal.
