KATHMANDU: Nepal’s main opposition party, the Nepali Congress, on Thursday launched a strong criticism of the government over the recent violent incident in Kaptanganj, Sunsari, demanding that the government accept full responsibility for the tragedy.

Addressing the House of Representatives during a special session, Chief Whip Basana Thapa drew Parliament’s attention to the incident, stating that Om Prakash Gupta was killed and dozens of other citizens were injured in the violence.

Thapa accused the government of failing completely to maintain peace and security.
“Such a major incident has occurred, a citizen has lost his life and dozens have been injured, yet the government appears helpless,” Thapa said. “The government must answer for this incident and take full responsibility.”

Questioning the government’s leadership and response, she also criticized the silence of Prime Minister and Home Minister.
“The Prime Minister remains silent on such a serious matter. It is equally surprising that the Home Minister, who becomes emotional on many occasions, is also silent today,” she said. “Leadership is not only about running the administration; it is also about protecting the lives and property of citizens.”

The Nepali Congress chief whip demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, immediate legal action against those responsible, and adequate compensation for the victims’ families. The Kaptanganj violence has sparked growing political concern, with the opposition increasing pressure on the government over law and order and public security.
