Nepali youth continue to depart for foreign jobs during Dashain

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: Hundreds of Nepalis continue to depart for foreign countries for employment and studies even during the second day of the major festival of Dashain. Despite the festive atmosphere and family gatherings, the flow of youth leaving through Tribhuvan International Airport remains steady as many seek better economic opportunities abroad.

The ongoing migration reflects the shifting economic and social landscape of the country. Many travelers cited a lack of sufficient job opportunities and professional growth within Nepal as the primary reason for choosing to leave during the holiday period.

Lakhan Kumar Yadav, a traveler from Siraha, expressed his frustration over the lack of domestic employment that matches his skills. “If there was a guarantee of finding work according to my qualifications and ability within the country, I would not have wanted to leave my family in the middle of Dashain,” he said. “I am going abroad for the sake of my family’s future.”

Prakash Khatri, another passenger from Gulmi, noted that the lack of competitive salaries and the visible financial success of those who have previously migrated contribute to the trend. “With limited opportunities in Nepal, low wages, and the improved social and economic status of those who return from abroad, many feel compelled to choose a golden future over celebrating festivals at home,” Khatri said.

Meanwhile, some observers worry about the long-term impact of this brain drain. Thakkar Kalel from Kailali, who was at the airport to see his son off, acknowledged that foreign employment often helps improve a family’s financial situation but warned of the risks posed by the loss of active human capital. He expressed concern that the departure of skilled and hardworking youth could lead to a severe labor shortage in sectors such as agriculture, industry, construction, and tourism.
