NPL boosts sports tourism potential, calls for expanded air connectivity

A A+ A-

KATHMANDU: The third edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) has provided a significant boost to the country’s tourism sector. The arrival of international players, coaches, and spectators for the tournament has increased economic activity in the hospitality, food, and transport sectors. Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) President Binayak Shah stated that the NPL has played a positive role in promoting Nepali cricket globally while directly benefiting the hotel industry.

All eight franchise teams participating in the tournament are accommodated in major hotels. The influx of supporters for teams like Sudurpashchim, Biratnagar, Lumbini, and Chitwan has stimulated the local economy. Shah emphasized that the NPL should be developed not just as a cricket competition, but as a vehicle for sports tourism. He highlighted the need for a strategic approach to attract cricket fans from South Asia.

Shah noted that the International Cricket Council (ICC) recognition and the ongoing upgrades to the Tribhuvan University cricket ground offer major opportunities for Nepal. He believes that linking these developments with tourism could yield substantial benefits. Currently, Nepal’s hotels have the capacity to serve 3.5 to 4 million tourists annually, yet the country only receives between 1.1 and 1.2 million visitors per year.

To protect investments in the tourism sector and attract more visitors, Shah called for the expansion of international air connectivity. While Flydubai has recently commenced flights to Pokhara International Airport, he noted that overall international connectivity remains limited. Furthermore, following floods in the Rasuwa and Bhote Koshi regions, international tourists have been inquiring about safety in Nepal. Shah urged government agencies to coordinate in providing clear and accurate information regarding the safety and status of tourist destinations to the international market.
