KATHMANDU: The 64th establishment day of the Nepal Red Cross Society is being observed today with the slogan ‘Solidary for Humanity’.

As an integral part of the World Red Cross movement, Nepal Red Cross was established on September 4, 1963 (Bhadra 19, 2020 BS).

In a message delivered by Secretary General of the Nepal Red Cross, Rishi Raman Khanal noted that over one million Red Cross volunteers are engaged in humanitarian service related activities.

Currently, the society has organizational structures including seven provincial committees, 77 district branches, 1,623 sub-branches, 115 support committees, and 6,587 junior and youth circles.

The services and development programmes of the Red Cross has benefitted 3.5 million people annually, the message reads.

Nepal Red Cross has been deploying volunteers from the very beginning to support families affected by the devastating flood that hit the Trishuli River in Rasuwa on last August 26.

The humanitarian organization has been providing services in search and rescue, relief distribution, psychosocial counseling, and temporary shelter.

The response so far has included distribution of 1,418 tarpaulins, 1,520 blankets, 1,930 body management bags, 715 mattresses, and 80 temporary toilets.

In addition, 55 first aid kits, 760 dignity kits, 9,000 N95 masks, and 392 sanitation and hygiene kits have been distributed.

Almost 5,000 volunteers have been deployed by the Nepal Red Cross Society for the flood response.

Along with providing relief in flood-affected areas, the Nepal Red Cross is preparing plans for rehabilitation programmes to build resilient communities in the future.

For flood response, Nepal Red Cross has received support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and partner national societies.
