KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has blamed the government for the escalating violence in Sunsari and Siraha, accusing it of failing to protect citizens and responding with excessive force instead of pursuing dialogue.

Expressing deep concern over the recent unrest in Dewanganj Rural Municipality of Sunsari, Oli said in the Facebook the deaths of local youth Om Prakash Mehta and Ganesh Yadav, along with the serious injuries sustained by several others due to state action, were tragic and deeply disturbing. He said reports of further shootings and additional fatalities in Siraha and other areas had left him “shocked and grief-stricken.” He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Oli said the government’s primary responsibility is to safeguard the lives and property of citizens and resolve disputes through dialogue. However, he alleged that the government’s silence, indifference and excessive use of force despite the deteriorating security situation were “highly questionable and condemnable.” He urged the authorities to immediately halt violence and engage in meaningful dialogue to restore peace.

Warning against attempts to divide society through misinformation and provocation, Oli called on political parties, civil society, the media and the public to exercise restraint and work together to preserve communal harmony and national unity. He also urged the country’s major political parties to set aside partisan rivalry and cooperate in maintaining peace, security and political stability.

Stating that violence can never provide a lasting solution, Oli said only dialogue, consensus and responsible political cooperation could help the country overcome the current crisis. He appealed to political leaders, intellectuals, civil society and religious and community leaders to unite in the national interest and work collectively to restore peace and social harmony.
