KATHMANDU: CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has demanded a serious investigation into the violent incidents that occurred on Sept. 9 and 10, calling for legal action against those responsible.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Oli expressed condolences to the youth who lost his life during the youth demonstration on Sept. 9 and wished for the speedy recovery of those injured. He also paid tribute to the police personnel who died in the line of duty during the subsequent events.
Oli stated that it is natural for citizens in a democracy to present their expectations, grievances and demands to the government. He noted that the constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, protest and the democratic process of forming or changing a government.
He described the arson, vandalism and attacks on the President’s office, Prime Minister’s residence, Singha Durbar, Parliament building, Supreme Court, political party offices and public and private property on Sept. 10 as a painful moment.
Oli recalled that his former cabinet had decided to form a judicial commission to investigate the events, lift the temporary ban on social media, provide free medical treatment to the injured and offer compensation to the victims’ families.
The statement also noted that the then-Home Minister had resigned, taking moral responsibility for the tragic incidents.
