KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has implemented a special security plan across the country targeting the Tihar, Nepal Sambat, and Chhath festivals. Over 50,000 police personnel have been deployed to control theft, robbery, gambling, alcohol consumption, public disturbances, and the use of firecrackers.

Central Police Spokesperson Abhi Narayan Kafle stated that the security plan was developed in coordination with district security committees to ensure the festivals remain peaceful and orderly. Security measures include the deployment of plainclothes officers in high-risk areas, as well as the use of CCTV, body-worn cameras, drones, and trained police dogs. More than 50 drones will be used to monitor crowded areas and public gatherings.

Border and customs checkpoints are under strict surveillance to prevent the import and distribution of firecrackers and explosive materials. Spokesperson Kafle urged the public to refrain from using firecrackers, noting that they pose significant risks, and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the police hotline at 100.

To prevent market irregularities, such as artificial shortages, price gouging, and food adulteration, joint market monitoring is underway. Regarding transportation, authorities are prioritizing vehicle safety inspections, driver license checks, and the mandatory requirement of two drivers for long-distance vehicles. To assist travelers, 408 passenger assistance desks have been established nationwide, along with 108 citizen assistance desks at border points to prevent fraud and robbery.

Police have advised citizens traveling during the holidays to remain vigilant about home security and avoid sharing information about empty houses on social media. Residents are also cautioned to use lamps and candles carefully during Laxmi Puja and to avoid low-quality electrical appliances to prevent fire hazards. Quick Response Teams and CRV units have been kept on standby to address any emergency incidents. The special security plan will remain in effect from Tihar through the day after Chhath.
