KATHMANDU: The Kaligandaki corridor 220 kV transmission line has been damaged due to continuous rain and landslides, causing a halt in the production of over 358 megawatts of electricity.
The Nepal Electricity Authority reported that the damage occurred on the Dana-Kushma section, which connects Myagdi and Parbat, disrupting power flow from 12 hydropower projects.
The affected projects include the 40-megawatt Rahughat hydropower project, constructed by a subsidiary of the Nepal Electricity Authority, along with several private sector projects.
The list of halted plants includes the 71-megawatt Nilgiri-2, 48.5-megawatt Upper Rahughat, 42-megawatt Mistri Khola, 38-megawatt Nilgiri-1, 35.5-megawatt Rahughat Mangale, 22.5-megawatt Upper Thulokhola, 21.3-megawatt Thulokhola, 14-megawatt Gharkhola, 13.6-megawatt Thapakhola, 6-megawatt Relekhola, and the 5-megawatt Ghalemdi hydropower project.
The sudden removal of 358.2 megawatts from the national grid has created challenges for system management. The transmission line structures sustained damage due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
Authorities are preparing to deploy maintenance teams to identify the specific damage points. Repairs will commence as soon as weather conditions improve, with efforts focused on restoring electricity services as quickly as possible.
