KATHMANDU: Power generation at the Kaligandaki A hydropower plant in Syangja has been suspended following three days of incessant rainfall.
The 144-megawatt project halted operations on Friday at 8:45 p.m. after water levels in the Kaligandaki River rose significantly.
Project chief Atmesh Poudel stated that the decision was made to mitigate potential risks caused by the high water flow. All three sluice gates at the Mirmi dam have been opened to manage the surge. The project will resume regular power generation once the water levels in the river subside, officials said.
The unusual rise in water levels during the month of October has increased risks for nearby settlements and infrastructure. The heavy rainfall has disrupted daily life in the region, with reports of flooding affecting several houses in Setibeni, located at the confluence of Syangja, Parbat, and Gulmi districts.
